eTrizzle leads Android Apps of the Week

eTrizzleThis week's releases are pretty heavily focused on streaming and media, from motion comics to movies, and even Pokmon! Our top app is eTrizzle, a media hub that makes it easier than ever to find content you want without having to check multiple sources. We've also got a great app for helping your friends and family with technical problems, a launcher with a built-in social network, an interesting app for checking out digital motion comics, and yes, an app dedicated entirely to the Pokmon TV show!

eTrizzle (Free)

As brick and mortar video stores hang on for dear life over the perilous pits of obsolescence, media soaks like myself are being faced with brand new problems. For example, with so many streaming and digital rental/purchase s ervices, how do I keep track of which services have which movies, or which would be the most cost effective? That's easy! I just use eTrizzle! It brings all the catalogues of the big streaming services into one handy place, from Netflix to iTunes to Amazon to Crackle to HBO GO. Now its much less frustrating to find that one obscure Takashi Miike horror flick you wanted to see...

Optia (Free)

People in my generation, and the several that come after it, pretty much have all had the unique privilege of acting as personal tech support teams for our parents, auntie, or grandparents. From teaching them how to text message to fixing their phone settings or even teaching them how to properly close apps, the question s never seem to end. With Optia, our jobs just became even easier. Optia lets you share screens between different devices, so you can easily give instructions. You can even highlight different areas of the screen, and there are more features, like step-by-step instructions, coming in future updates. You're welcome, Grandma.

NARR8 (Free)

NARR8Digital motion comics have gained more and more traction as a legitimate entertainment medium. Barely animated with a bit of voice acting, properties as big as Watchmen and Buffy The Vampire Slayer have been brought to life through the motion comic treatment. NARR8 is an app dedicated to bringing episodic motion comic content to us all, completely for free. The comics in this app don't have the nearly the pedi gree of those I listed above, but they're still solid stories that come in quite a variety of genres and styles. Of course, you can share what you're viewing through social networks as well. At no cost, this is a very interesting app to check out.

Pokmon TV (Free)

Sulia Quick Launch Android appThis app may not be the top app of the week, but it is the top app of my heart. Granted, I pretty much gave up on Pokmon after the games Silver and Gold were released, and stopped watching the show around the third movie about a decade ago. But that doesn't make this app any less awesome, for adults, children, and parents who need to distract their children alike. You can watch Ash Ketchum defy nature and avoid puberty through years and year s of the show, all through this app, completely free, with a huge selection of episodes to watch alongside special features and trailers. I suddenly feel like dusting off my old Pokmon card collection! But first

Sulia Quick Launch (Free)

Closing out our weekly list is this great new launcher app. Sulia Quick Launch lets you check out social network feeds from Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, plus search the web, all directly from your lock screen. That's right, you don't even have to unlock your screen to check Facebook anymore. Just imagine the nanoseconds you'll save! But seriously, this app is very convenient. Upon unlocking the screen, it's easy as can be to access your camera, dial pad, recent apps, messages, etcetera, all while keeping you connected to the Sulia social network for sharing news on all sorts of topics of interest.

Android App Video Review: Syder Arcade HD

Syder Arcade HD is the debut Android title of developer Studio Evil, which is an awesome studio name in my opinion. It's a simple arcade shoot-em up with a focus on slick HD visuals and an excellent electronic soundtrack as you blast away waves and waves of enemies. It's a bit of a short game, but it's also really quite challenging, and the difficulty more than pads out the content to be worth the asking price, if you like a challenge.

Through six campaign levels and a survival mode, you can take one of three ships out into the galactic battles that await you. Each ship has a different weapon load-out and focus, from the usual all around ship, to the highly armored defensive one, and the extremely frail but powerful one. Each has a different primary weapon, plus special weapon which you charge by killing bogies and pulling off combos. Enemies will also drop upgrades and power-ups, some of which permanently enhance your ship, until you run out of lives, anyway.

This is a side-scrolling shooter in every sense of the word, but one interesting feature makes it feel a bit more unique and open. You aren't just set on rails heading in one direction. You can actually flip your ship to face left or right, and explore each level fully. This is great for levels like the second, in which you must escort an allied ship through enemy infested territory. You can scout ahead and clear enemies as fast as you are able. I had a lot of trouble keeping the allied ship alive, even on lower difficulties, which is why I say the difficulty could use some tweaking.

As I mentioned, the 3-D visuals are crisp and the soundtrack is just great, with more traditional sci-fi sounds along with retro chip tunes. Although, it can occasionally be hard to see what's going on in the chaos of lasers and missiles. My Motorola Xoom had a surprising amount of trouble handling this game, with somewhat lengthy load times and bouts of lag, though you can diminish this by closing background apps. In the end, Syder Arcade HD is pure arcade shooter fun at its best, and you can download it now for just one dollar.

Will PlayStation 4 truly boost Android games?

Last week, Sony revealed at a gigantic press event in New York the existence of the PlayStation 4 console, and we are all so very excited. And, I should note, it's not just exciting because it is pushing us into the next generation of console video games. The PlayStation 4 will usher in a new level of connectivity between home gaming and mobile devices.

At the reveal event, Sony discussed a bit how that will happen at the launch of the system at the end of 2013. The PS4 will have a companion app for iOS and Android devices that will operate not unlike the Xbox SmartGlass app; it will enhance games by including, for example, in-game maps of the world you're exploring. If you want an idea of the kinds of experiences a second screen can give you, check out this write-up on SmartGlass, as Sony wasn't ex actly forthcoming about the features of their app.

Sonys social and stream gaming evolution

Sony did detail one potentially interesting idea. The PlayStation 4 will allow users a level of social interactivity that we havent seen before, allowing your friends to peek in on your games as you're playing or even, if necessary, take over the game remotely if you need some assistance. The ability to watch your friends play will not be limited to the console itself. You will be able to do that from the companion app. This is not unprecedented, as OnLive has had this function available for years.

What may have been the most compelling point Sony discussed at the event, though, was something they're "exploring" but will most likely not be available for the console launc h. Last year, Sony purchased the Gaikai game streaming platform, which will allow users to stream demos of the games they are thinking of buying from the PlayStation Store. If you're not familiar with the streaming tech, games process at a remote server, the video feed beams to your TV, and your controller inputs are beamed back.

Steadier connections

Beyond streaming demos, integrating Gaikai's cloud gaming into the PS4 will allow for remote play of games on the PS Vita handheld. Although Sony is currently working toward allowing PlayStation games -- and they specifically mentioned PS3 games -- to be played on any screen, including mobile devices.

OnLive has explored this idea with its Android app, but most of the games available on that platform cannot be play ed with touch controls. OnLive is a PC platform at heart, as you instead need the licensed OnLive Bluetooth gamepad to play a lot of the games, and even then you can't play anything that requires a mouse and keyboard.

Of course, what Sony will likely do to make these games playable on tablet will be to either optimize each game for a touch control individually as that would be more effective, likely, than to use the same on-screen controls for every game or make them work with a version of the DualShock controller that will interact with mobile devices. Whatever they do, they have more money than OnLive to put into the tremendous project.

The idea that each game platform doesn't have to be a traditional walled garden is still very new, but it seems that Sony has realized that if they want more connectivity they have to open up the gates. Make no mistake, though; Sony is not creating any open platforms. They would allow their products to interact with a Sams ung tablet because they need to remain at the head of the console pack. The future is no place for insular experiences.

Right now, it looks like Sony is pioneering home-and-mobile-gaming connectivity, but we cannot forget that Microsoft started this off with the SmartGlass app, and we don't know yet what massive Seattle-based company has in store for the next generation of Xbox. We most likely won't have to wait long to find out, though, as all signs point to an unveiling in a month or two followed by a launch pre-holidays shopping. One has to assume that they will fire back with some mobile interactivity of their own, seeing as how they actually own a mobile platform.

Sony's intentions are noble, and if they demonstrate that their mobile features are indispensable, we might get somewhere with console integration. However, we're just starting down that road.

With mobile apps, the more things change...

Change. It seems like the last year has brought more change to mobile apps and the digital publishing space than the previous ten years combined. At the company where I work,Zinio, we have watched our entire world change as we grew to 5,500 magazines and moved from desktop into PCs, iPads, smartphones and eBooks.

If youre reading this, its a safe bet to say that your reading habits have changed significantly over the past year. Pew Research claims digital media is now the second most popular way to get news. More people reported getting news from online and mobile sites than from radio or print newspapers. This year, for the first time, 100% of publishers will format content for mobile, according to anAlliance for Audited Media survey of 210 media companies in North America. The development points t o the importance of digital publishing as well as the overwhelming change that readers have demanded.

Digital content is truly available anytime and anywhere and app users know it. Publishers get it at varying degrees. Hearst (Elle,House Beautiful,O) now reports that smaller tablet sizes have finally moved to digital subscriptions on their biggest titles. In fact 40 percent of its traffic is mobile. But maybe the most high-profile change has come from the oldest magazine in America:The Atlantic.

The Atlantic has long-embraced mobile apps. In fact it has adapted its content packages extremely well for online, print, and then mobile. Its 155 years old. But its latest redesign announced on Feb. 21, shows a great willingness to change.

In a Feb. 21 editorial, Editor James Bennett says, The Atlantic has also thrived, in part, by changing. To promote the competition of ideas,The Atlantic now has three We b sites and conducts dozens of live events a year. Our printed words are also conveyed digitally, on the Web and on tablets and phones. We are reaching a far larger audience than we ever have. Optimism about changeimpatience for itwas part of the radical founding ethos ofThe Atlantic, and this has turned out to be a good thing, today as in 1957, given all the forms and means of expression that are clamoring for your attention (though still not drowning out the poor LP, let alone radio, television, or the picture bookmaybe because, in testament to the suppleness of human intelligence, technologies have a way of supplementing, rather than simply replacing, one another.)

Although at Zinio we think wide selection and discovering new content will change the way you read, we dont expect it to completely replace your old habits. In fact we see that 15% of our readers use all three platforms to reach their magazines each month. All of which goes back to James Bennet ts point that technology definitely supplements rather than replaces consumer behavior and the same holds true with digital publishing. Were with James Bennett and kudos toThe Atlantic.

These Twitter Android apps have character

Twitter is my favorite social media outlet. This is where I get my news, sports, learn about new apps, and mobile hardware, usually every hour. As Android devices and the OS have changed and developed, so have Twitter client apps. It has been a while since I covered Twitter apps for Android, so in todays post I will explore some of the best and most recent apps for Twitter users.

Tweetings for Twitter ($2.99)

I use Hootsuite on my computer, but Tweetings has become the default Twitter app on my Galaxy Note 2. Its a very powerful app that is constantly updated and improved. The app has a huge set of options such as text size, display names, show times, links, and a fast scroll bar. If you are looking for an app that you can customize, then Tweetings should be at the top of your list. The app allows you to choose which options such as timeline, DMs, mentions, lists, accounts, appear on the top menu bar. You can also choose between two different themes (light and dark).

Tweetings allows for multiple Twitter accounts. The app will show both at the same time using a thin color bar to the right of the post to indicate the associated account. Another valuable option is that you can schedule tweets. The app supports posting to TwitLonger and inline expansion. You can upload images to pic.twitter.com as well as Img.ly, TwitPic and yFrog. The app support Multi-window support for compatible devices (such as Galaxy Note 2). It has photo editing available as a free downloadable extension and integration as a DashClock extension.

Falcon Pro (for Twitter) ($0.99)

Falcon Pro is a relatively new Twitter app that has received a lot of attention. As I am writing this, apparently the app has reached its Twit ter token limit, a new rule Twitter has placed on 3rd party apps. Hopefully Twitter will allow this app to continue to develop. The most attractive feature of Falcon Pro is the layout. The app consists of a double sliding menu, meaning the main view is your timeline. Swipe left to access your account details, such as timeline mentions, DM and retweets. Swipe to the right to get your lists, starred users, saved searches and trends.

On the main timeline screen, Falcon Pro provides a quick summary on the number of new tweets, mentions, and messages. The app runs smoothly and is one of the most visually appealing. The app does not have a lot of options when compared to Tweetings, but enough to put your own mark on the app. You can choose the theme, text size, sync rate, and notifications. The app supports Multi-window for compatible devices (such as Galaxy Note 2). There is also an embedded YouTube player in the app. Right now the app only can handle one Twitter account at a time.

Carbon for Twitter (Free)

Carbon for Twitter is a free and simple app, which is definitely not a bad thing. Note that this app can only work on devices with Android OS Jelly Bean or higher. There are not many settings to worry about, as you can pretty much only modify notifications. The app does allow for multiple accounts, but the timeline will only display one account at a time. To switch accounts, simply swipe to the left to see the list. The menu bar on the bottom has three buttons: add tweet, account indicator, and short cut to settings, favorites, lists, search or trends.

To see you mentions and direct messages, you need to swipe right and then tilt the timeline to refresh. You can also swipe down with two fingers to power scroll. Overall, Carb on gives you a clean, easy to read Twitter app. You can tap on a tweet to retweet, quote, send, favorite, and see conversation.

Slices for Twitter (Free)

Slices for Twitter has been out for some time. There are two versions to the app, the free version and a paid version which does not display ads. Slices takes a slightly different approach to tweets; when you open the app, you are presented with your standard timeline. At the top of the screen, you can see the number of new tweets, mentions and messages. There is a button to create a new tweet and to jump to the top of the timeline. To access the settings of the app, hit the menu button. There you can modify some settings such as number of tweets to display, notifications, other services you can log into like Facebook, and add multiple Twitter accounts.

So what makes Slices so unique? It lets you browse a Twitter directory by category. When I started my app it listed sports, gaming, and local, which is definitely a neat option. Think of slices as another way to create lists. Another cool feature of Slices is that you can see your statistics such as top tweeters, your tweets, and the time of tweets. You can easily share your slices and bookmarks.

Of course these are not the only apps out there. Android Central has a neat post comparing the timeline views of many of these Twitter apps. So which one(s) do you use or like?

Ball of Woe tops Android Games of the Week

Sonys announcement of the PlayStation 4 is not the only development in the world of gaming right now. There are loads of new Android games to play with this week. There's a musical space adventure, a ball with a face on it, an 8-bit liquid puzzler and an old classic reborn, among others. Here are the highlights!

Ball of Woe (Free)

This game from Doppler Interactive is a unique platformer, in which the people of Nicetown have rolled their sadness up into a little ball and set it loose on the world. Of course, everything goes wrong, and the ball must save everyone and go to a Heaven of sorts. Ball of Woe employs swipe control, and your goal is to roll the ball away from the Nicetown folks. Visuals aren't exactly high-resolution, but they are stylish and defini tely cool to look at. And then you have the soundtrack, which is quite engaging, and a story that is actually quite compelling for a mobile game.

Stereoride (Free)

This little gem from Moarbile Games puts you in the cockpit of a space ship that flies around and collects stars, while avoiding being smashed to smithereens by asteroids. Sounds a bit basic, yes, but what makes Stereoride interesting is that you can plug your music into it, and the game will generate the visible universe based on your musics sounds. You'll have to see it to believe it, but I assure you that it is quite the compelling experience.

Syder Arcade HD ($0.99)

While we're talking about space games, I feel its the right time to bring up Syder Arcade, a space shooter - not unlikeGeometry Wars - with quite the hard edge. Though this is the kind of game you'd normally expect to play with a twin-stick gamepad on a home console or a PC, touch controls are more than adequate, and man does this thing just look gorgeous. Syder Arcade from Studio Evil is one of those games for which you'll need to close all your background apps or else you might get some stutter. Did I mention this game is really hard?

Briquid ($3.56)

Gamious' effort is a puzzler that involves moving water from one place to another, but it really isn't anything like Where's My Water? at all. In this game, your attempts are aided by your ability to add and remove bricks to the puzzle area and shift the direction from which gravity draws the water. All of this is wrapped up in a really old-style visual experience, and it really wouldn't have been surprising to see this title running on PCs in the late 80s. Instead, it's here now, and it's high quality.

Forever Lost: Episode 1 ($2.33)

As we've discussed before, more old-style adventure games should make a home on mobile because touch controls just screams for those types of games. Forever Lost: Episode 1 by Glitch Games, with its Myst-ish gameplay, is almost an ideal mobile experience with its interface, and it's pretty creepy to boot. Also, it has a hint system that will help you out when you encounter difficulties, and so you won't get stuck in a room for weeks like you probably did with Myst back in the day.

Metal Slug 2 ($3.99)

SNK has a good track record for bringing old games to Android, and they've finally given us Metal Slug 2, a side-scrolling shooter ma ny gamers loved when they were younger. This game is a classic of a genre nearly lost to time, and so it's worth a look for that reason alone. The game comes with a co-op feature, just like the original version, which you can enable via Bluetooth. So you get a great game, and you don't have to feel antisocial toward the people you know in real life in order the play it. That's a rare feat in mobile games, which too often focus on online play rather than couch co-op or local competitive multiplayer. Metal Slug 2 demands your attention.

Android App Video Review: Cordy 2

SilverTree Media has been knocking it out of the park with their roster of games. The robotic platformer Cordy was awesome, the vertical jumping spin-off Cordy Sky was solid, and the creative arcade title Sleepy Jack was just sublime. Now, theyve gone back to their roots and brought us Cordy 2, and this little robot received one heck of an upgrade. With smooth platforming and creative levels, Cordy 2 is pretty much everything a platform game fan would want.

This time around, Cordy and Volt have crash landed on a new planet, where the mechanical inhabitants are enslaved by the tyrant Boogaloo. Yes, thats really his name, with all the enemies having the word Boogie somewhere in their names. Its up to Cordy to stop him with new abilities, new friends, and a host of new adventures across three beautifully rendered worlds.

Despite the kid-friendly approach to aesthetics, this game is really quite hardcore. Just beating every level will not be enough to progress. Each level has up to three stars to earn; one for reaching the end, one for finding all the volts, and one for beating the level within a time limit. Later levels are blocked off unless you have enough stars, so youll have to go back and replay old levels if you dont have enough. Thats not really an issue though, as levels are simply a joy. Theyre non-linear, pleasing to the eye, with plenty of nooks and crannies hiding secret areas.

Cordys base abilities include a double jump, plus a grappling hook that he can use to swing from certain nodes or access teleportation circuits. Now, through plenty of helpful friendly robots that he wears like backpacks, he can do a lot more. Magnetbot lets him stick to surfaces and use free speed boosts, Smashbot lets him break block obstacles, his old pal Volt turns into a jetpack, and Copterbot is used in levels that are just like the Flash game Helicopter, or more recently, Jetpack Joyride. Fully exploring every level with these different abilities is more than satisfying.

With top notch visuals and sound, a fleshed out robotic world, bonus challenge levels that you can purchase with gears, which are more like puzzles than full levels, and even customization options for Cordy, there is no shortage of things to love about Cordy 2. Now, the first four levels are free to try, and the full game will cost you five dollars. I know thats pricier than other games, but the content more than backs up the price tag. It is definitely worth checking out for anyone who has ever enjoyed a platformer.

Whats cool? Like other adventure games, Forever Lost operates with point-and-click puzzle mechanics, meaning youll tap the screen to get around and spend most of your time trying to figure out puzzles and fetch important items. The game has something of a horror bent in terms of its storytelling, dropping players into the middle of the world they have no memory of and asking them to uncover the mystery of what has happened and where they are. These Android side-scrolling games sprint past the competition

Side-scrolling games are the bread and butter of mobile gaming, and my phone is packed full of them. And so when Vector,a free-running game a la Mirror's Edge on iOS, hit the Google Play Store last week, I got all pumped about it.

But there was a catch. Despite the fact that my Galaxy Nexus isn't close to being obsolete, Google Play informs me that the version of Vector currently available is not compatible with my device, which stops me from downloading this Parkour-inspired game.

This is a tragedy, but I wont let it bring me down. There are so many other side-scrollers out there supported by the Galaxy Nexus, so I drowned my sorrows in some of them. If you find yourself unable to satisfy your Vector fix, I have some side-scrolling alternatives to share with you.

Cheeseman (Free)

From the developers of the console and PC sensation Super Meat Boy comes an absolutely punishing platform game that will keep you coming back for more. The objective of Cheeseman is simple: run through the levels as fast as you can. But the execution is more complex, because the game hates you and wants you to suffer. Thankfully, levels are quite short, so it's not super frustrating to have to retry a couple dozen times in a row.

Check out their launch trailer:

The key to Cheeseman is that it is never overwhelming, and it feels as if you're always close to conquering a le vel. If only you can make that jump just right this time. You can do it, man!

Canabalt HD ($2.99)

This gray-scale game has you run, run, run across buildings as the world ends, and you have to survive as long as you can, which will likely be a relatively short amount of time. Canabalt makes your character go, and your job is merely to make him jump at the appropriate moments by tapping the screen. It's got heart-pounding music to go along with it, making the experience thoroughly adrenaline-fueled. It's simple and fun enough to keep you trying over and over for a high score on the leader board. Canabalt was published by Kittehface Software and developed by Semi Secret Software.

Ski Safari ($0.99)

This is a lot like Canabalt in t erms of mechanics, except this time you ride down the mountain on your skis or snowmobile or the back of a yeti. Since you're riding downhill, you are self-propelled, and once again all you have to worry about is jumping. Unlike Canabalt, though, where you need to avoid falling into holes and dying, what you're worried about here is the avalanche sliding down the mountain behind you. You have to go fast if you want to survive, which you won't, because eventually you'll goof up. But the fun is in seeing how long you can last.

Stickman BMX (Free)

In Stickman BMX you are a Stickman biking across a treacherous course, and you must attempt tricks and grind on rails. It's not really that complicated. As the mobile gaming world has proven over and over again, though, simplicity wins hearts over, and Stickman BMX, while I really don't have much to say about it, owns my heart. It's a pleasing experience. This is my personal favorite of the Sti ckman games, mostly because there aren't enough bike games out there.

Jazz: Trump's Journey (Free)

This jazz-fueled platformer takes you on a journey through some old school clubs and the streets of New Orleans, and while this one won't challenge you the way Cheeseman does, it is really delightful. I like to keep this app open just for the tunes, but I also keep going back to try to find more of the hidden collectibles I missed on earlier runs through the game. Getting through the game is nice, but collecting musical notes is addictive.

Sonic 4 Episode 1 ($3.99)

Although this new version of the original Sonic game from the Genesis days initially had some issues on the Galaxy Nexus, it totally works right these days. Handling a g ame as fast-paced as Sonic 4 Episode 1 can sometimes be a little bit problematic with touch controls, but, hey, it's Sonic. I'm 25 years old, and Sonic was definitely a big part of my childhood, even though I was primarily a PC gamer growing up. In any case, Sonic 4 Episode 1 is an authentic Sonic experience, and it's guaranteed to help you stop wishing you were still a wee gamer.

New Android apps worth downloading: Slacker Radio update, Tapestry, Zombie Minesweeper

Todays fresh apps start with an impressive user interface update to Slacker Radio, a service that predominantly streams music and talk radio. Weve also got Tapestry, an app that delivers free short stories straight to your device, and Zombie Minesweeper, a fresh (though undead) take on the classic numbers-based puzzle game.

Slacker Radio update (Free)

Whats it about? Stream all kinds of music to your mobile devices with Slacker Radio, which was re-released with an ample redesign.

Whats cool? There are other streaming music apps out there, but Slacker Radio is designed to give users more than just a big library of songs. It includes a huge amount of music, as well as curated song lists and even radio channels such as ABC and ESPN. In addition to the 200 or so curated lists, you can create stations of your own that combine music and talk radio. The new interface adds some much needed polish.

Whos it for? If youre already a user of Slacker Radio or youre looking for a new streaming music service, tune in to their app.

Whats it like? For some Slacker alternatives, try Spotify and Pandora.

Tapestry (Free)

Whats it about? Tapestry is a free short story reading app that provides regular new short stories from various authors, including Robin Sloan.

Whats cool? User interface and ease of reading is what makes Tapestry cool, plus it provides short stories free of charge. The app focuses on making the presentation of those stories simple and beautiful, maximizing the touchscreen to make moving through short stories easy. You can also share stories with others through social networks and email. Tapestry also supports offline reading, so you wont be shackled to your Internet connection.

Whos it for? Short story fans and readers will find lots to like about Tapestry.

Whats it like? Both Short Stories: Feeling Written and Short Stories also contain a lot of free fiction.

Zombie Minesweeper ($0.99)

Whats it about? Remember Minesweeper? The puzzle game had players clearing a grid of squares and searching for mines by using numbers as clues. Zombie Minesweeper starts with that formula and adds the element of setting landmines to explode hungry animal zombies.

Whats cool? Just as in the original Minesweeper, you need to pick your way across the games levels by carefully determining where mines are located around you. The twist? At the same time, you have to escape zombies closing in on you from around the level. On the plus side, youll find various weapons, including bombs, and traps you can use against the zombies to buy yourself more time as you figure out how to get where youre going, and you can lure zombies into mines youve discovered.

Whos it for? Minesweeper fans, zombie fanatics, and anybody who likes a good action-puzzler should download Zombie Minesweeper.

Whats it like? For more takes on Minesweeper, give Minesweeper Classic a shot, as well as MineCraft Sweeper.

Prepare for the SAT or ACT with these Android apps

As I finish my coverage of educational apps for Android devices, todays post is specifically for high schoolers preparing on taking the SAT or ACT exams. When taking these exams, practice is important. There are a large number of practice-related apps on the market and some cost quite a bit. I would recommend trying the free options available before investing in any of the expensive apps.

Virtual SAT Tutor Vocabulary (Free)

This is one of at least four different apps from Ivy Standard, a test preparation site. The other apps they have cover math, English, and writing. This is a free version of the app, but you can purchase the full version, which has over 150 more words and removes ads.

Vocabulary is very important in studying for the SAT. This app shows you a word and provides four possible answers to its definition. It is just you and the vocab term, so no timer or fancy graphics. The app keeps track of your streak (good or bad), and displays tips and tricks, such as providing info on the root meaning of words. Overall, this is a very helpful vocabulary app.

Test Logical Reasoning (Free)

This app is designed to help students improve problem-solving skill by focusing on logical reasoning. It is a free app supported with ads. There is a paid version of the app, which appears costs $2.99 and removes all in-app ads. The app has 10 categories of questions you can choose from: Number Series, Essential Part, Matching Definitions, Logical Problems, Statement and Assumption, Theme Detection, Letter and Symbol Series, Analogies, Making Judgments, and Logical Games.

When you start the app you can decide how many categories you want to work on. When you begin you will have a question to re ad and then four answers from which to choose. The app does not allow you to choose an answer so when you figure it out, hit the show answer button and see how it compares to yours. In addition to the answer, there is a short explanation. The app will also allow you to share the question with friends.

SAT Word A Day Audio (Free)

This app takes a different approach to helping students learn vocabulary. Instead of trying to cram, this app is designed to work on one word a day over a lengthier period of time. This is a free app that is supported by a small banner ad, and I couldnt find any way to remove the ads. The app has some nice features, and I would recommend using them to get the maximum benefit. You can set up the app to give you notifications of the arrival of new words and the daily word. Another neat option is that you can have the app pronounce the word to you.

Opening the app, you will be presented with the word, its definition, and an audio button. Confident students can easily hide and then guess the definition. You can favorite any word and then access it along with your other favorites from the bottom menu button. In addition to the daily word, you can find a random word(s). A fun feature of the app is that you can share the word as a challenge to your friends.

SAT Question of the Day Free (Free)

As with the previous app, this app is set up to do a little bit of work each day. This is the free version of the app which has over 5000 SAT vocabulary words and over 150 SAT math problems. The pro version has over 7000 SAT words, over 250 SAT math problems, and over 250 SAT Sentence Completion Problems.

When you open the app, you see three types of questions. For vocabulary questions, you will need to choose the correct definition and for math problems, choose the correct solution. For the SAT question, you will need to complete the sentence with the correct word. There is an explanation to the answer if needed. The app is set up for daily testing, but you can also pull up the last five days of questions. You can also pull up a random word or math problem, too.

Preparing for the SAT or ACT is very important for those students hoping to attend a good college. These apps should help those students with math, vocabulary, and general logic problems.

New Android apps worth downloading: Pokmon TV, Bump update, DIE HARD

If you or your kids are into the cartoon show Pokmon, were about to improve your Monday with Pokmon TV, todays leading app worth downloading, which allows users to stream Pokmon straight to their Android devices. Following that is an update to info-sharing app Bump that lets you share files between your Android device and computer. Lastly we have DIE HARD, a Temple Run-style title meant to promote the new movie A Good Day to Die Hard.

Pokmon TV (Free)

Whats it about? As the name suggests, Pokmon TV enables you to stream Pokmon cartoon shows straight to your Android device, wherever you are.

Whats cool? There have been a lot of episodes of various animated versions of the v ideo game Pokmon over the years, and Pokmon TV makes them available to users for streaming instantly over a Wi-Fi or cellular Internet connection. You can watch entire episodes of Pokmon from your device, and the app includes other content like Pokmon movie trailers and special features.

Whos it for? For Pokmon cartoon show fans (who are mostly little kids), this app is a must.

Whats it like? For more streaming videos, TV and movies, try Crackle and Cartoon Network Video.

Bump update (Free)

Whats it about? Bump is an app for sharing contact information and files just fill in your info, then bump your Android device against someone elses to exchange phone numbers, email addresses and photos.

Whats cool? Bump simplifies the sharing process, turning it into a sort of digital handshake, by which you can exchange info with another person through their Android device. Its not just contact information, either Bump will also share photos and videos when you bump devices. The latest update to the app makes it possible to bump files between your smartphone or tablet and your computer, as well.

Whos it for? If you find yourself networking a lot or just like the freedom to quickly share photos and files with other people (or computers), check out Bump.

Whats it like? Theres a similar premise behind SocialThump, although that app is geared toward sharing social media info. You can also use Sonar to find people you know from the Internet the next time youre at a convention or similar event.

DIE HARD ($0.99)

Whats it about? Last week saw the release of A Good Day to Die Hard, and along with the movie came a game, DIE HARD, which riffs a bit on the Temple Run formula.

Whats cool? DIE HARD successfully borrows from (or maybe rips off) the Temple Run formula by putting players in an over-the-shoulder perspective of protagonist Jack McClane. Just like other runners, your goal is to keep moving while taking corners and dodging obstacles, but DIE HARD adds to the formula by putting a gun in your hand and requiring you to quickly take out enemies before they shoot you. The mixture of fast reflexes and a little bit of tactical strategy successfully helps DIE HARD feel fresh in an overcrowded genre.

Whos it for?< /strong> If you like DIE HARD, running games or shooting guys, youll like DIE HARD.

Whats it like? Youll obviously see similarities between DIE HARD and Temple Run; another similar title is TheEndApp.

Cordy 2 tops Android Games of the Week

This week brought us a sequel to the beloved mobile platformer, Cordy, though Cordy 2 blows its predecessor out of the water. Weve also got a new holiday spinoff of Wheres My Water?, a fantastic retro dungeon crawler, a slick new skateboarding game, a stylish new Parkour-based runner, and a wacky and colorful new racing/platforming game. Valentines Day may have come and gone already, but thats no reason to deny these great new games the love they deserve!

Cordy 2 (Free)

The first Cordy was a fun platformer with a unique aesthetic, and overall a solid game. Developer Silver Tree Media is back though, and Cordy 2 improves on the original in many ways. This free to try platformer is packed with awesome content, from the smooth platforming to the customization options an d unlocks, plus more of the unique robotic world that Cordy and his new helpful friends inhabit. Everything has been improved for this sequel, with a thick coat of polish thrown in for good measure. This is probably one of the best mobile platformers out there today.

Wheres My Valentine? (Free)

Wheres My Holiday? was the first Wheres My Water? spinoff to be based on a holiday, and it turns out it was just the first of what is likely to be many more. As before, this is like a free sample platter of both Wheres My Water? and Wheres My Perry?, featuring a short story for each of them with 12 exclusive Valentines themed levels. You can even buy the full versions of the other two right from the app itself. For those of us who already own those games, this is worth checking out strictly for the new levels, but otherwise its the same brilliant physics gameplay that weve come to know and love.

QuestLord ($1.99)

This is probably my favorite new release for this week. Its an old school, grid based, first person dungeon crawler. This is just another example of a near extinct genre being resurrected by the good grace of mobile gaming, and the freedom it provides developers. If the nostalgia alone isnt enough to carry you through this game, then you can rest easy knowing that the vast, non-linear, pixilated world is full of items to find, enemies to fight, with plenty of things to discover on subsequent playthroughs. Plus, an optional perma-death roguelike mode is there for the hardcore among you. They dont make them like this anymore.

Boardtastic Skateboarding 2 (Free)

This is really more like a big update or expansion to the first Boardtastic Skateboarding, which relea sed early last December. It updates everything, and introduces a multiplayer component for a complete package. This game is sure to satisfy any skating fans, especially since there are less skating games to be found on mobile in general. Heck, you can even play this at the skate park! The 3-D visuals are awesome, the gesture based controls are well implemented, and there are plenty of customization options for your skater as they skate around the world, with plenty of upgrades attached to clothing and decks.

Vector (Free)

Surprisingly, for all the popularity Parkour and Free Running have attained in the YouTube age, there havent been many games to make use of them as a theme yet. Sure, consoles have Mirrors Edge and Assassins Creed, but on a platform with so many darn runners, youd think thered more than there is. Well, Vector is here to fill that exact niche. With a gorgeous silhouette art style and excellent animation, youll leap ac ross rooftops, using gesture controls to pull off awesome tricks with an emphasis on maximizing speed. Its easy to pick up, but difficult to master, with 20 tough levels to play.

Roller Rally Snake Pass ($1.09)

This is a new platformer from Milky Tea Play. It involves zooming downhill in your roller skates and building up speed as you race the clock or your opponents. The whole game takes place in a colorful and random world, with you playing primarily as a stuffed bunny rabbit, though there are other characters to unlock. You can challenge your friends on the leaderboards in any of the games twenty levels, full of ramps, loops, and so much more.
