Android App Video Review: Sleepwalker's Journey

11 Bit Studios saw great success with their reverse tower defense game, Anomaly Warzone Earth. Lately however, before releasing the sequel Anomaly Korea, they've been trying some new things. Namely, they released the oddball Funky Smugglers, and this little gem you see here. Sleepwalker's Journey takes the Lemmings or Luminosity style gameplay and puts it in a wonderful dreamlike setting, with sound and music to match. All together, this creates a wonderful puzzler with a lovely aesthetic that anyone can enjoy.

< /embed>

After being knocked from your sleeping place on the crescent moon, our protagonist begins sleepwalking back towards it. It's up to the player to keep this unknowing fool alive by manipulating the environment around him as he walks. This includes but isn't limited to: Moving platforms and ramps, turning fans on and off, firing him out of cannons, connecting platforms with special rope, and much more. As with Anomaly, there is a fast forward button here to alleviate frustration and let you play at your own pace.

As it stands now, there are three worlds with fifteen levels each, with more promised in future updates. In each level, you'll have to collect all the stars, the three somewhat hidden moons, and reach your bed within a certain time limit to get that gold medal. Like many games, it is time consuming when you want to get that gold medal, and I mean that in the best way possible. As I mentioned earlier, the colorful, cool visuals are just lovely, with a lot of purples, blues, reds, and yellows, creating an aesthetic that you really don't see in games. This relaxing aesthetic combined with well designed puzzles leads to a game that everyone should give the time of day. I definitely recommend Sleepwalker's Journey, available now for only one dollar.

Best Android games of 2012

This year saw a handful of hall of fame games released concurrently on Android and iOS, in addition to the great games that made their way to Android after landing in Apples App Store. Heavyweight publishers and developers dominated 2012s mobile gaming world, but there were some feel-good surprises along the way. Without further delay, here are our (with contributions from Andrew Koziara, Phil Hornshaw, and Marty Gabel) top ten picks for the best Android games of 2012.

Rayman Jungle Run ($2.99)

Based on the utterly brilliant Rayman: Origins (a console-based platformer to rival even Mario), this auto-scrolling runner manages to keep all the creativity and bizarre charm of its predecessor, but with bite-sized levels and half of the controls removed! S eriously though, Ubisoft stripped Origins down to its core for this simple game, but its just as fun and the visuals are just as jaw-droppingly crisp and vibrant as ever. Its a bit more challenging than other runners, but both adults and kids can spend hours playing this game.

Angry Birds Star Wars (Android smartphones free, Android tablets $2.99)

Star Wars merchandising - both before and after the Disney acquisition, has never felt so good. The newest edition to the Angry Birds family is just plain awesome. Old birds are re-dressed as Luke, Han, Obi-Wan, Chewie, and the rest. The birds get all new powers to boot, including shooting blasters and swinging light sabers. The game is a brilliant mix of the old school Angry Birds mechanics and the gravity mechanics of Angry Birds Space (also a worthy addition to any best of 2012 list). Add all the Star Wars references and visuals (from the original trilogy, only) and you have a ga me that is out of this world.

Superbrothers Sword & Sworcery (Free)

Just in time for end of the year lists, the award-winning action-adventure game Sword & Sworcery has made the trek from the iTunes App Store to the Android side. Sword & Sworcery focuses more on aesthetics and experience than it does on things like dialog and story. As you play through it, youll find yourself in a strange and beautiful 8-bit world, where sound and music are just as important as visuals. Superbrothers game is about searching for an ancient magical tome and using its power against an evil growing in a distant mountain, and youre the only one who can stand against it but youll need to unlock the mysteries of the land by solving the games puzzles.

Jetpack Joyride (Free)

Jetpack Joyride, released by Halfbrick Studios on Android in September, is the endless running game closest to perfection. Although it launched and rocketed to the top of the charts on iOS in 2011, the games presence in the Android Market was substantial. In Jetpack Joyride you play as the fiery and uber-manly Barry Steakfries, who swipes a top secret jetpack from a laboratory only to be met by thousands of obstacles including electric pillars, rockets, and terrified scientists. Your goal is to collect coins and get as far as you can before dying. The game has an exceptional sense of humor and an impressive array of interchangeable costumes, jetpacks, power-ups, and vehicles.

JAZZ: Trumps journey (Free)

Loosely based on the life of Louis Armstron g, JAZZ: Trumps journey plays well as a greatest hits for platform games. This jazz musician comes equipped with a trumpet that stops time as he wanders around searching for others to join his musical efforts. You also collect musical notes and photographs in each level. With beautiful graphics that capture 1920s era New Orleans, a unique story, great controls, and of course a killer soundtrack, Trumps journey has enough features and depth to appeal to established gamers while also serving as a spirited and soulful introduction to newbie players.

N.O.V.A 3 ($6.99)

If you are a fan of first-person shooters, than this is the game for you. Developed by Gameloft, N.O.V.A. 3 more than any other title available on mobile devices moves and feels like a console game. N.O.V.A. 3 has you blasting aliens and enemies through a number of planets (including a war-torn Earth). The multiplayer aspect of the game will have you sharing your battle with as many as 11 other players. Each beautifully animated level takes about 30 minutes to complete, offering a lot of bang for your seven bucks.

Amazing Alex ($0.99)

After a few straight years of massive success, fame and fortune from the Angry Birds intellectual property, Rovio is finally bringing us something different. Amazing Alex is actually based on another game entirely though, called Caseys Contraptions. The studio bought the game up and gave it new visuals and mechanics. Its essentially a casual puzzle game involving Rube Goldberg style domino effect machines. Heck, this all just reminds of the game series Tim, which I played when I was six. Originality aside, this is a well-made title from an insanely popular studio, and you will all surely play it. Th eres also a free version and HD version available.

Subway Surfers (Free)

Subway Surfers is a colorful game with attitude, putting you in the role of a rascally kid on a hoverboard who has to surf some subways to outrun the grumpy guard who catches him spraying graffiti on a train. The game has a similar feel to Temple Runs over-the-shoulder perspective and Jetpack Joyrides mission system. When it's available, you simply double tap the screen to switch over to your gravity-defying board and get away even faster. Marty McFly would be proud.

Zenonia 5 (Free)

Gamevil's biggest cash cow and easily their best franchise has returned in the fifth incarnation of the KRPG, Zenonia. This time around the game is much improved, as the ongoin g and somewhat convoluted story ceases to be an issue. The game jumps years into the future and introduces an all new hero on a quest to stop the corrupt elite and underlying darkness that contorts their souls. All the genre staples return, from the dynamic gameplay and leveling to the online PVP, and they even bring four new classes to the fold, being the Berserker, Mechanic, Wizard, and Paladin.

Sleepwalker's Journey ($0.99)

After the smash indie success that was Anomaly: Warzone Earth and now Anomaly Korea, 11 Bit Studios seems to have been enjoying their cushy financial net, celebrating by releasing other, smaller titles like Sleepwalkers Journey, a gorgeous new puzzle adventure. Like Lemmings, or the somewhat popular Xbox Live Arcade title Lucidity, your goal is to place and shuffle objects in the environment to protect your constantly sleepwalking character from enemies and hazards. The gameplay is solid, but w hat should grab you immediately is the very cool and unique art style.

New Android apps worth downloading: Instagram update, Pitfall!, Dueling Blades

If youre still a fan of Instagram despite its policy change fallout, youll want to grab its latest update, which also serves as todays leading fresh app and adds a new photo filter. Following that, weve got Pitfall!, an endless runner that reinterprets the Activision classic, and Dueling Blades, a hybrid strategy game with multiplayer capabilities.

Instagram update (Free)

Whats it about? A new filter and new languages have come to one of the most popular photography apps on Android.

Whats cool? Instagram has suffered from its share of public relations missteps lately, with lots of users deleting the app because of changes to its terms of service. If youre still with the app, though, youll at least get someth ing for your loyalty specifically, a new filter added in the apps most recent update called Mayfair. Theres also support for 25 more languages with the update, and the ability to share Instagram photos to Facebook pages. As always, the app is filled with easy-to-apply photo filters and sharing capabilities, as well as its own social networking tools like the ability to view, comment on and favorite other peoples photos.

Whos it for? If you like vintage photography and social photos (and youre not angry over the change to ToS that has the Internet in an uproar), Instagram is for you.

Whats it like? The recently updated Twitter app also contains photo filters of its own, and alternatively, theres Paper Camera for other cool effects.

Pitfall! (Free)

Whats it about? Activisions gaming classic has been reimagined as a third-person endless runner, much like Temple Run and similar titles.

Whats cool? Taking a page from the popular Temple Run, Pitfall! is mostly about running through the jungle and avoiding obstacles by jumping, sliding, and juking back and forth. But Activision has added a lot of other features, like animals you have to fight off with Harrys whip, sections of the game that have you riding a moped scooter or running through a village, and more.

Whos it for? Like other runners, Pitfall! is a fun and addictive way to waste a few minutes, so if you like games like that, check out this one.

Whats it like? Temple Run is an obvious comparison, as is Temple Run: Brave.

Dueling Blades (Free)

Whats it about? A mix of role-playing, fighting and turn-based strategy genres, Dueling Blades is a multiplayer fantasy game with an interesting way of depicting its battles.

Whats cool? As mentioned, Dueling Blades mixes elements of a number of genres to create its unique gameplay. It combines both real-time and turn-based strategy elements, meaning you and your opponents enter your moves for each turn at the same time, and theyre executed simultaneously. Youll need to anticipate what your opponent is going to do, while they try to do the same with you. The game includes multiple classes of fighters from which to choose, and you can improve them over time as you play through either the story mode or Dueling Blades multiplayer mode.

Whos it f or? If you like strategy titles and taking down real opponents in online multiplayer, Dueling Blades is worth your attention.

Whats it like? Battle Fury and Great Big War Game will also please strategy game fanatics.

Android App Video Review: Oscura

Oscura is a stylistic platformer from the Chocolate Liberation Front, surprisingly brought to us by MTV Networks of all places. On top of that, it's actually quite good. It has some glaring flaws to be sure, but it's a solid game with some clever design and absolutely excellent aesthetics and music which make it stand out from most other mobile platformers including the ones it's rather similar to. It may offer more style than substance, but it's still good fun and easy to recommend.

You ar e Oscura, the guardian of a special lighthouse. This lighthouse keeps all the dark forces in the world at bay, and one day, the light is shattered and scattered about the world. Now, it's up to you to restore the light bit by bit, and the horrific creatures of darkness will be there to stop you every step of the way. But no, really, they're honestly pretty terrifying, whether you're avoiding the winged beasts, the charging stag men, or any of the other lovecraft inspired cthuloid horrors.

As you collect light shards and special gears, you'll have to navigate the environment like any other platformer. You can even slow down time for short bursts to help yourself out. However, this game took a page from the popular indie title Limbo's book, shrouding everything in the foreground in complete darkness, silhouetting it against the bright backgrounds. This allows for a similar use of devilish traps that hide in the environment, but otherwise, the games are very di fferent tonally and mechanically. Limbo was more about puzzle solving and atmosphere, while Oscura is more action focused, and with more color.

The default control scheme is pretty well done, using only gesture commands to play so that we may enjoy the visuals completely. However, as the current scheme can be a bit wonky, you might want to switch over to the virtual button controls, even if it does mean the buttons interfere with the aesthetics. The physics are also a bit inconsistent. Still, outside of these small gripes, it's a solid game that is more than worth the current asking price of one dollar, even if it is a bit short.

Vudu Movies and TV leads Android Apps of the Week

The holidays may have come and gone, but now we prepare to step into a new year with some new apps, forever venturing forth. One of those new apps is a Vudu Movies and TV app, letting you stream from the Vudu service. Weve also got fancy new keyboards and slick alarm clocks, a parking spot finder for The Windy City, and an innovative but somewhat incomplete photo sharing app. Lets do this.

Vudu Movies and TV (Free)

While it isnt as popular as Netflix, and probably never will be, Vudu Movies and TV streaming has offered media mavens an alternative place to view, rent, or purchase digital version of all their favorite films. In fact, many studios are supporting Vudu, with blu-ray/DVD copies of movies coming with a Vudu digital copy promo code. Now you can stream those movies to your Android device, and it works well too. Its great to be able to watch a solid selection of mobile movies on the go, even if this is far from the first app to let you do so. All in all, its a pretty cool service.

Kii Keyboard (Free)

No matter what the application is or how full featured it may be, developers always find room for improvement. Even something as simple as a keyboard can be vastly tweaked to offer new features and customization options. Thats where Kii Keyboard comes in. It offers some slick new ways to type, such as gesture-based typing and smart word predictions. You can also make use of plenty of different themes and set your own photos as the keyboard background image. Go ahead and give it a try.

SpotHero (Free)

This is a very specific app for a certain group of people, and Im sorry to include something so exclusionary on this list, but its been a slow week, and I have a personal bias on this topic. SpotHero is a brilliant app for people who live in the Chicago area, where this lovely website is based and where I grew up. Its meant to find cheap parking by comparing and contrasting various garages by location. This is an impressive feat, I assure you, especially since the app offers some exclusive discounts just for owning it. You can even reserve parking spots ahead of time. Its just awesome, and hopefully they branch out to include other major metropolitan areas in the near future.

Wave Alarm (Free)

Some alarm clocks have you solve a sliding tile puzzle and a few calculus problems before shutting off an eardrum destroying wail, which believe me, some people really desperately need. If youre more of a morning person, and are co ncerned with style and simplicity with your alarm clock apps, then look no further than Wave Alarm. Its a slick new alarm clock app that uses your devices front facing camera as something of a motion tracker, letting you snooze or shut off your alarm with a simple motion. It boasts plenty of other features as well, such as real time weather updates and music library alarm choices.

Flock (Free)

Flock is an interesting new app that gets an A+ for effort and innovation, but a C- or so in execution. Essentially, its a photo sharing app that seeks to separate itself from Facebook and the rest, making it easier for you to find photos based on time and location taken rather than sift through a dozen albums online. Using facial recognition, it auto-tags your friends and creates albums for you with no real input. You dont even have to open the app to use it. Unfortunately, the software needs some work, with a lot of bugs and wonky features, bu t definitely keep your eye on this one.

Get mysterious with these fun Android point-and-click adventure games

One of the more interesting and unique types of games you can enjoy on Android is the point-and-click graphic adventure game. What exactly is a point-and-click adventure game? Well I would describe it as an interactive story-driven game where you take on the role of the main character. To move forward, you have to explore your surroundings, discover items, and have some puzzle-solving skills. Right now, there does not seem to be a lot of these games in the Play Store, but hopefully this will change in the future.

Some other key aspects about point-and-click graphic adventure games are that there is usually not much dialogue, nor written words, nor other characters in the story. You really are on your own! This definitely adds to the suspense and mystery of the games. Unfortunately, you can usually only play one game at a time and once the game does come to an end, its replay value is limited.

The Lost City ($0.99)

The Lost City is the second point-and-click adventure game from Fire Maple Games. Their other is The Secret of Grisly Manor. Legend has it there was a civilization that somehow could control the seasons. The Lost City was part of that civilization. Grandma told you stories about the place. Now with her map and mysterious stone, you set out to find what happened. Before you know it, you are deep in the forest.

The Lost City is a beautifully designed game. The graphics and gameplay are very smooth and the game plays well on both small and large screens. The Lost City has some help options built into it. Within the game, there is a journal that keeps track of all the symbols and clues that you encounter. It also has a dynamic map that shows all of the areas you have explored, as well as your current location (very helpful). The game is broken up into eight chapters and there is a hint guide and walkthrough if you want to use them.

Cryptic Caverns ($0.99)

Cryptic Cavern is a relatively new game from 3D Methods. They have a second point-and-click adventure game called Cryptic Keep. You are shipwrecked on a deserted island... or you thought it was. You soon find out you are not alone and that a thriving civilization once lived there. Your job is to find out what happened to those that lived there. That means going into the caverns!

Cryptic Cavern is a nicely done mystery/puzzle game. It has an overall dark mood and theme to it, which is very appropriate. The game works well on small and large screens. After speaking with the developer, future updates are in the works. Ther e are over 30 items to discover and use. The game does have a hint section for items and puzzles.

Escape room: Strange House (Free)

Escape room: Strange House is one of numerous point-and-click adventure games from IDAC Co. LTD. Some of their other titles are Dangerous Luxury Liner, Escape room: Prank House, and Escape Room: Snow White. Each of these standalone games is free. There is a creepy old house at the edge of town and you, being a curious person, decide to go in and see what it is all about. Well, when you do, the door locks behind you. The only way out now is to go through the house. To do that you must solve and figure out numerous puzzles and clues.

Escape room: Strange House can be a tough game. I got stuck on more than one occasion and took a lot of clicking on the screen to find things. Unlike the other games listed here, there is no hint section. Also the game only plays in portrait mode only, making it a bit difficult on small screens to see or discover items.

The Passenger ($1.00)

The Passenger is quite a bit different from the other games listed here. What is the story line? Well, that is a bit hard to say. The game opens with a man in a hat and trench coat saying goodbye to his family. Why is he leaving? Where is he going? What happened? You do not know. He gets on a train. He appears to be all alone in this very dark and spooky-looking city.

The game is played in the third-person. Clicking on the screen will make the character walk to that spot. Items to be collected will be highlighted and then placed in an on-screen tray. The game is a bit more abstract with 2-D hand-drawn backgrounds and character animations. They are nicely done and really add to the suspense and mystery of the game.

So if you like a good mystery and are naturally inquisitive, then point-and-click graphic adventure games should be right up your alley. These inexpensive games will definitely get you thinking and provide some very satisfying puzzle gameplay. In all of these games, the story line is plays a critical role and the games offer a nice change of pace to most other puzzle type games currently available.

Android App Video Review: McPixel

McPixel is one of the most bizarre and entertaining games to come out this year. From the moment of its inception by developer SOS, it was destined to be a cult classic. To put it in a nutshell, it's a challenge based point and click adventure game that thrives on random situational humor, mostly at the expense of its main character, McPixel. Its retro aesthetics are the very opposite of pleasing, yet match the quirkiness of the game perfectly. This is definitely the game to get if you want something a bit different.

So essentially, it's up to you to stop explosions. lots and lots of explosions. In each level of each level pack, you'll have twenty seconds to interact with your environment to prevent whatever explosive is around, whether it's throwing a torpedo out the window of a submarine (defying all logic), or sacrificing a virgin to the angry volcano god. If you find all the jokes and gags in the six levels in a pack, you also get a bonus level. There are four worlds with three level packs each, an ending world, and an endless mode that lets you replay old levels.

To be honest, the randomness of the puzzles can be a bit frustrating at times, but that's all part of the charm. How were you to know that you had to smack that DJ with something so that he'd throw his record at you, miss, and cut someone's afro in half, carrying the bomb out of the club? Odd combinations and chains of events like this are often the solution, but brilliantly, some puzzles are absolutely blatant and clear as day about the solution, only you might be conditioned not to try the obvious solution at that point. This game is just packed with hilarity and variety, and it's completely original to boot. If you still have reservations, there is a lite version to try. Otherwise, McPixel can currently be yours for the price of three dollars.

FIFA 12 by EA Sports for Android knocks one in the back of the net

Football fans across the world rejoice! While Xperia PLAY owners have been kicking the ball around for months, EA Games have finally delivered their definitive soccer experience to major Android mobile handsets. While the whopping 1.5+ gigs of data files may be hard to swallow, its immersive experience and feature rich options shows that EA Games have pulled no stops.

While companies like Konami and Gameloft have tackled the sport with PES 2012 Pro Evolution Soccer and Real Soccer 2012 respectively, it's safe to say that EA deserves the cup. Sure, Real Soccer is free, but Gamelofts pay-to-play model can be severely off-putting. On the other hand, while PES 2012 is great in its own right, its lack of tablet optimization and fewer features, all the while similarly priced, is a hit and miss. EA Games attention to detail truly shines in this latest iteration. From minor details such as the option to choose the ball (pink Puma Ball included), to real players faces, it's certainly a no-brainer which soccer game is king.

Like the NFL license of years yonder, EA currently holds the FIFA license. So it comes as no surprise to find that all your favorite teams, including those in different international leagues, are present. However the lack of online and even local multiplayer won't settle any bar fights. This omission is greatly disappointing as the AI, while certainly remaining challenging, stays at the same difficulty throughout the season.

Daily Challenge, Kick-Off, Practice Arena, Instant Replays are paired with not-so-terrible touch controls, so FIFA 12 is rolling in the right direction. Bottom line, EA Games brings every inch of the virtual field from its larger console version. Top it all off with an exhausting list of content coupled with great graphics, its the authentic soccer, er... football experience you've been looking for.

Best Android apps of 2012

Our favorite Android apps, that were either released or received significant updates in 2012, are all available free of charge. This years list is topped by Instagram, which had the biggest breakthrough on Android, and showcases new and meaningfully updated apps that simply work better than their competitors. In this age of algorithmic aggregation, we also salute titles that have a decidedly human touch.

Instagram (Free)

Instagrams arrival to Android was a positive development to say the least for the photo-sharing pioneer. Within one week, Instagram attracted more than 5 million downloads. A few days later, the company was acquired by Facebook for what was at the time a 10-figure valuation. Why include Instagram on this list? Because the photo-sharing app didnt star t breaking records until it opened up to the Android community, where it gained millions of new users and hundreds of millions of new filter-fab photos. Instagram is known for its filters, of course, which add a retro feel to any photo. Dont forget to geo-tag and hashtag your photos, to make them easier to share and discover with other Instagram users around the world.

Slices for Twitter (Free)

From reading commentary during live news and sporting events, to sharing information about public transportation during Hurricane Sandy, to finding out what your friends are up to this weekend, Twitter in 2012 emerged as a (if not the) primary resource for real-time news and information for mainstream users. With millions of feeds to follow, however, its challenging for five-year veterans and newbies alike to keep this vast flow of information organized. While there are many third-party apps that help users categorize who and what they follow o n Twitter, Slices is the best one for smartphones right now.

Flipboard (Free)

The worldwide leader in socially curated news had a busy year after being named our favorite iOS app of 2011. Highlights from 2012 include Flipboards arrival on Android devices, YouTube, and Google+ integration, as well as a picture-perfect partnership with the New York Times. Id argue that its better to read all the news thats fit to print via Flipboard than anywhere else.

Songza (Free)

Audio streaming services like Pandora, Slacker and Spotify are changing the ways in which we consume music. Rather than listening to albums or pre-programmed playlists, we now have access to entire stations on our computers and mobile devices built around our favorite artists and songs. This year, the Songza app added a human element to this kind of algorithmic-driven music curation with a major update that showcases playlists created for particular moods or times of day. Best of all, even after hundreds of hours of happy listening, I still havent heard an ad on the free service.

Viggle (Free)

You no longer need to feel guilty about wasting the day away curled up on the couch watching television. With the Viggle iPhone app, you can get compensated from the likes of Amazon.com, Starbucks and the Gap merely for watching and checking in to many of your favorite programs. Viggle uses audio recognition technology similar to what is found in apps like IntoNow and Shazam to do much of the work for you. Just sit back and appreciate that you are getting rewarded for doing absolutely nothing.

Crackle Movies & TV (Free)

While there were no technological breakthroughs from this Sony-developed video-streaming service in 2012, we salute Crackle for its exclusive programming. In August, Jerry Seinfeld returned to the small screen with his Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee online series that was shown exclusively on Crackle. Netflix and Hulu may be splashier, but neither could show Seinfeld riffing with Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner while eating Chicken in the Pot soup and watching Jeopardy.

Stitcher Radio (Free)

Although podcasts dont have the same pop-culture cachet as apps, the digital audio files are a godsend to talk-radio junkies and anyone who appreciates the spoken word. From past episodes of This American Life and Wait WaitDont Tell Me! to comedy programs like The Nerdist and WTF with Marc Maron, to long-form interviews from your favorite sports commentators, there are podcasts that appeal to virtually every interest. The best bet for podcast discovery on Androi d devices comes from the fifth-generation edition of Stitcher Radio, which rolled out earlier this year.

Highlight (Free)

Highlight, which alerts you when a Facebook friend or individual with similar interests is in your vicinity, was the most successful app of its kind to emerge from South By Southwest in March. Since that time, Highlight has significantly improved with new features that let users send group messages to those nearby and comment on their friends profiles. The apps notification system is also vastly improved.

Pocket (Free)

While many were predicting the demise of Pocket with the arrival of iOS 6 and the ability to read articles offline in Safari, the app remains the best Read it Later alternative for all Android devices. Accessing content through the app is a pleasure. Its other features such as changing text size, sharing through myriad services, and archiving finished content are simple and intuitive.

Zinio (Free)

Although Zinio first appeared on iOS devices in 2009, the digital magazine application is more recently pioneering how consumers purchase advertised and editorially curated products on touchscreen devices. A partnership with ShopAdvisor lets readers purchase and learn more about products they are interested in without leaving the page they are reading. Zinio has a roster of more than 5,500 publications that can be read seamlessly across any mobile and desktop device worth owning.

Android App Video Review: Great Big War Game

This is one that I've been waiting a while a for. It's been quite a long time since Rubicon Development put out Great Little War Game, a fantastic turn based strategy title with a sense of humor. Now, we finally get a sequel in Great Big War Game, and "Big" is definitely a fitting descriptor. This game ups the ante everywhere, with more units, stronger design, and a huge campaign mode. It's not as original as the first, and is essentially more of the same, except way, way better.

We rejoin the Generaliss imo and his army, including his new assistant, Candy, in their ongoing war efforts. That's pretty much all there is to the story. On to the gameplay! The turn based, hexagonal gameplay is more polished than ever, with balancing tweaks and new units. More importantly, the missions themselves are often very complex and well designed, requiring real strategizing. The mission objectives are more varied than ever, including fun tasks like assassinating the enemy general or saving up large amounts of gold. As you play, you'll also earn battle points, which can be used to buy permanent upgrades for your units.

Aside from the single player, we have a thriving multiplayer. Whether you want to play against AI opponents or real people in the skirmish mode or just pass and play with a friend, Rubicon has you covered. There are more customization options than ever, and you can even design your nations flag! The humor has also been turned up to eleven, with hilarious cut scenes be tween missions and great lines from individual units.

Technically, the game is very similar to the last, with only slight visual improvements, but the game still looks great. They've also introduced a very literal fog of war mechanic, making scout units very useful and upping the strategic elements even more. It's a charming, hilarious title with unique visuals and solid gameplay. It's still not a perfect game and really feels like a lot more of the same, but it's definitely worth a download. Great Big War Game is available for three dollars at the time of this review, which is a steal considering the massive amount of hours you can waste playing it!

Take to the high seas with these pirate-themed Android games

Ever wanted to be a pirate? Do you celebrate Talk like a Pirate Day? If you are a fan of anything pirate-related, then these Android games are for you. Pirate-themed games are very popular and there are a lot to choose from. Those listed below provide a nice selection of what is out there, maties!

Pirates 3D Cannon Master (Free)

In Pirates 3D Cannon Master, you command a ship and your job is to destroy the enemy boats. The game is a massively multiplayer online (MMO) game so you will be playing with others around the world. Victory is achieved by working with the others players online as each battlefield has its own goal. The three battlefields are Team Death Match, King of the Islands, and Capture the Flag. Each player has their own role and skills in each battle so teamwork is critical. The controls ar e very simple, you can steer right or left (as your ship is constantly moving) and then fire from each side. There is radar to help find the enemy and your current health.

As you play, you will earn coins which than can be used to purchase additional ships. You may also purchase coins (with real money) in the Galley area. There is a practice area so you can work on your steering and firing skills before joining the real battle. When you are ready to play, you can choose from the list of current battles taking place. It will tell you the type of battle and how many are currently playing. Since this is an MMO, you will have your own profile and list of achievements. The game provides daily and weekly rankings. Overall, the graphics and gameplay are nicely done.

Pirates of the Caribbean (Free)

The Pirates of the Caribbean game is of course based on the very popular movies from Disney. The game starts off with you choosing a name and pirate flag, and then Captain Jack Sparrow taking you through a small tutorial. Your mission in the game is to go from island to island completing quests and destroying other ships. As you master or complete the quests at an island, another island will become available for you to plunder. When completing a quest or destroying enemy ships you earn gold which can be used to purchase items to strengthen your ship. To do a quest it costs energy and crew. When you have no energy or health you will need to wait for it to be replenished.

The game offers social gameplay. The more friends you have in your crew, the stronger you will be. You can invite them via Facebook or emai l. You can send your in-game friends gifts to help them out. You will earn some gems (the in-game currency) as you play, but you can also purchase them with real money. Gems can be used to improve your health, refill your stamina or energy, and hire crew from the game. Overall the game is fun and will provide tons of things to do on a daily basis.

Pirates and Traders (Free)

This RPG pirate game was recently updated to version 2.0+. I played the older version of the game and the new additions have made it much better. You start off by creating your pirate character. You can pick his nationality, background, three different attributes (physical, intellectual, social), the ship, your flag, and the games difficulty settings. There are numerous saved game slots so yo u can easily keep up with your progress. Once your character is created it is time to set sail.

You can choose on the map where you want to go. As you travel you will encounter different ships and how you interact with them is up to you. There is a storyline you can participate in or simply travel the Caribbean and seek your fortune however you want. As you do battle, your character will grow and develop additional skills and reputation. In addition to ships, you can dock in various ports to trade, repair, recruit and so on. There is a ton of detail and gameplay in Pirates and Traders. Check out their Wiki to see more details. There is a paid version of the game that removes ads and adds one background and five additional starting ships to choose from.

Pocket Pirates (Free)

In Pocket Pirates, you are the captain of a pirate ship and your mission is to sail around in search of treasure. As you travel, there are quests that you can fulfill to earn gold. There are also daily quests you can do to earn jewels and energy. Jewels are the in-game currency which you can purchase (with real money) if desired. The game has push notifications so you will know when it is time for the daily quests. Each quest or battle drains your energy and when you are out you will need to wait for it to be replenished or purchase more with jewels.

The game interface is very straightforward. There is the overall world map showing you where the different quests and ports are located, as well as a navigational map which you will use to sail to the different quests. The character area is where you can see your level, energy, jewels, gold and the bonuses you have earned. There is a timer on the screen showing you when your energy will be replenished. The key to the game is building up your characters level so you can have more energy and power this is done best by doing the quests and battles daily.

Sink Em All (Free)

Sink Em All is a pretty straightforward pirate game. You command one ship and you sail around destroying the other pirate ships. There are currently four chapters: Pirate School, Runaway of the Caribbean, Cold Cold Mountain, and 127 Degrees. The game shows another chapter yet to be announced. Each chapter offers a number of levels you can play and you can earn up to three stars per level. As the levels get harder, there will be more and more enemies to destroy.

The graphics are nice but I found the print in the game very, very small. Playing on a tablet might be better. You control your ship with the on-screen joystick and simply hit the cannon button to fire. As you destroy ships you can pick up gold and bonus items. Also, as you progress in the game, you will unlock the ability to purchase special weapons. These weapons can only be purchased with real money. There is a paid version of the game which has no ads and provides the player with starter weapons.

New Android device for the Holidays? Download these games first!

I can't figure out what I love more: The smell of chestnuts roasting on an open fire, or the smell of new electronics that you open on Christmas. Just in case the fat man leaves a new Android device under your tree this holiday, I've compiled a list to jumpstart your mobile gaming. There are so many great games being released all the time in the Google Play store. So many in fact, that it took me a few hours just to narrow my choice down to these few games released in 2012! Just in case these don't tickle your fancy, I've provided some alternative options that are similar for each entry. Down the chimney we go!

Jetpack Joyride (Free)

This is easily one of my top games of 2012, but it also happens to be a massively entertaining and accessible game which is also free, making this the perfect place to start your mobile gaming career. Its an auto-scrolling endless runner full of random fun. Proof? You play as a disgruntled evil lab employee who steals a machine gun propelled jetpack. Thats to say nothing of all the vehicles, costumes, and accessories youll see as you progress through the ranks. This game was developed by Halfbrick Studios, who also brought us the Fruit Ninja games. You can feel safe starting with pretty much any game from this studio.

Similar Games to Download: The psychedelic Whale Trail offers a similar if more colorful take on the genre, while Off the Leash gives us a similar experience from a top down perspective. Also, it has puppies!

Tower Defense (Lost Earth) (Free)

Not so long ago, it felt like we were all drowning in an ocean of towers and creeps with all the tower defense games around. The genre isnt the unstoppable force it once was, but there are still plenty of gems to enjoy. This little ditty from Com2Us is bright, colorful, and is very well balanced with a whole lot of variety to the missions and modes. Com2Us is one of those developers that has a representative for pretty much every genre. Though not all their games are top notch, this one is definitely worth your time.

Similar Games to Download: Sentinel 3: Homeworld and Fieldrunners make up two of the other best tower defense games on mobile, but if youre really hardcore, check out the superb reverse tower defense game, Anomaly: Warzone Earth.

Angry Birds Star Wars (Free)

I know literally all of you have probably heard of or played Angry Birds by now, but I still think they deserve a mention on this list. Developer Rovio had a fantastic 2012, introducing gravity mechanics and a sci-fi aesthetic in Angry Birds Space, and then refining and mixing those elements with the glory of the original Star Wars trilogy. Star Wars-inspired locations, level designs, characters, and powers make a good game into a great one, and theres no prequel stuff to be found anywhere! No Jar Jar Binks, no midi-chlorians. Feel free to check out Rovios other titles, Amazing Alex and Bad Piggies for more puzzle fun.

Similar Games to Download: If youd like to continue your physics-based fun, Wheres My Water? from Disney and Cut the Rope from ZeptoLab are both completely fantastic, and each have totally adorable mascots!

Great Big War Game ($2.99)

Going back to the strategy side of gaming, Great Big War Game is the biggest and best turn based strategy title in the series from Rubicon Development. The previous games, Great Little War Game and GLWG: All Out War, are also excellent titles, but GBWB is the most polished and balanced. It involves the military antics of a character simply called The Generalissimo. The hexagon tiled battlefields of this world seem simple at first, but there is striking depth and complexity. With loads of unit types and maps with a functioning fog of war, this game is sure to keep your tactical side happy. Also, there is a free lite version to try.

Similar Games to Download: A more innovative and novel hex-tiled turn based strategy game is the very intelligent Greed Corp. However, Ive got to recommend the far more casual yet delightfully sadistic Plague Inc.

Rayman Jungle Run ($2.99)

Apple named this title from Ubisoft the 2012 game of the year, and I completely agree, but I was totally praising this game before it was cool! Based on the utterly brilliant Rayman: Origins (a platformer to rival even Mario), this auto-scrolling runner manages to keep all the creativity and bizarre charm of its predecessor, but with bite-sized levels and half of the controls removed! Seriously though, they stripped Origins down to its core for this simple game, but its just as fun and the visuals are just as jaw-droppingly crisp and vibrant as ever. Its a bit more challenging than other runners, but do not skip this one.

Similar Games to Download:< /em> This is one of a kind, but some other platformers to enjoy include the stylistic and unique Jazz: Trumps Journey, or the adorable arts and crafts world of Paper Monsters.

Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour ($6.99)

My dear readers, we have finally arrived. The more hardcore among you have likely been wondering where all the gunplay and violence realistically rendered in 3D have been hiding in regards to this list. Look no further. Just released a couple weeks ago, Modern Combat 4 continues the Call of Duty-style mobile gaming saga. Modern Combat 3 dropped the ball with its Android port, with tons of bugs and glitches, but Modern Combat 4 is more polished, even if the single player campaign is a bit more repetitive. All the other games on this list are sim ple, so it might take some more practice and experience to get used to the complex touch controls offered here, but if you want more action packed, console-esque games on your device, this is an explosive place to start.

Similar Games to Download: Gamelofts sci-fi FPS N.O.V.A. 3 and its predecessors are also excellent. Meanwhile, games like Shadowgun from Madfinger and Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies from Glu Mobile can help round out that trigger finger itch.

Save old photos to your Android in a snap with the ShoeBox app

My in-laws were just over at my house this weekend for Mothers Day and we happened to get on the subject of old high school photos. I whipped out my box full of photos that was in no way organized, and my mother-in-law made a comment (Ill let you imagine what the comment was). Had I known about the free ShoeBox app for Android sooner, I wouldnt have had to bear the scolding I received via one glance about my disorganization (okay, well I guess I gave it away).

So basically this savvy photography app makes it super easy for you to scan in old photos you have laying around the housesay inside, maybe, some old shoeboxes. Aptly named app, yes? Once you take a digital image of your paper photo, the app helps you crop it with amazing edge detection. Although the edge detection didnt always work perfectly for me, it was easy to instead crop photos by dragging the edges to where I wanted them.

You can create a new album on your phone to organize photos and/or uploa d straight to Facebook for all your friends and family to enjoy. For newer photos, the scan quality isnt the best of the best. But for older photos, it works just fine. Older photos have a distinct color quality to them that you just cant get anymore with this newfangled technology. Everything is just so crisp and clear these days!

The app gives you free storage for an unlimited amount of photos. So if you have some old photos laying around that you want to share, start scanning them now with the ShoeBox app for Android.

New Android device for the Holidays? Download these apps first!

You mustve been awfully good this year for Santa to leave a shiny new Android device under your tree. Now its time to add some apps! Android has hundreds of thousands to choose from, many of which are free. Where to begin? Heres a short list of apps that will add a personal touch to your Android, because you, and your device, are one of a kind.

GO Launcher EX (Free)

One of the greatest things about your new Android is the fact that you can customize it to your hearts content. While the iPhone home screen is pretty standard (unless jail-broken), Android devices are powered by an open source operating system that leaves plenty of opportunity to play around. A great app to whet your appetite for custom home screens is GO Launcher EX, which replaces your Android home scr een with thousands of new options. You can choose from a number of themes, add custom gestures and several widgets for weather, your calendar, and more. The app has animation and effect capabilities you can add to your screen, useful management features for sorting, hiding, searching and cleaning apps, and icon resizing.

SwiftKey 3 ($1.99)

On the iPhone, youre pretty much stuck with the stock keyboard. The Android, however, supports dozens of custom keyboards that make your mobile communication much more efficient. SwiftKey 3 is a personal favorite, with top-notch predictive text, including the words youre likely to type next. The keyboard learns your words, phrases, and typing patterns to understand your individual interactions and better correct your spelling and grammatical errors. The premium keyboard also comes with multiple themes, and updated interface and support for 40+ languages (SwiftKey can support 3 languages at once). Cu stomizable for Gmail, Facebook and Twitter.

Instagram (Free)

Why include Instagram on this list? Because I can. Instagram was the darling of the iPhone, where it became wildly popular. But the photo-sharing app didnt start breaking records until it opened up to the Android community, where it gained millions of new users and hundreds of millions of new filter-fab photos. Instagram is known for its filters, of course, which add a retro feel to any photo. Dont forget to geo-tag and hashtag your photos, to make them easier to share and discover with other Instagram users around the world.

Google Search (Free)

While iPhone users have Siri, you have Google Search. Its the easiest way to find apps, contacts and everything else stored on your Android device, as well as search the web. And for Android 4.1 Jelly Bean users, Google Search comes with the new Google Now service, delivering the right information at just the right time. Its like the precogs in Minority Report, anticipating your every need. Google Now makes recommendations based on your regular activity and other Google account interactions, such as search, daily commute and more. So Google Now will give you the weather before you start the day, how much traffic to expect before you leave the house, and your favorite teams score while theyre playing. Your Google Now message Cards appear throughout the day right when you need them most.

Flipboard (Free)

Mobile devices have revolutionized the way we communicate, take in information and follow the daily news. Weve become social in new ways, and thats a good thing. Take in your social and official news sources in one beautifully designed app with Flipboard, turning your Facebook, Twitter, New York Times and other feeds into a digital magazine. With Flipboard you can read the news the way you want it, navigating by publication, topic or trend. Highly customizable and ever-evolving, Flipboards recent debut on Android makes it a worthy app for newbies to check out.

Beautiful Widgets ($2.49)

Another thing that sets your Android device apart from an iOS gadget is the ability to add widgets to your home screen. Widgets are great because they deliver the perfect mix of function and convenience, condensing the app experience quite nicely. You can even make your own custom widgets with an app called Beautiful Widgets, adding some personality to your clocks, weather displays and more. Pick your theme, layout, color combo and type of widget. You can even make multiple widgets to scatter across your many home screens. And be sure to check other apps that come with widgets, such as Evernote, Pulse News, Shazam and many more.

Cheezburger leads Android Apps of the Week

Well, weve finally arrived. Its the end of the world. And now, here at the end, we are faced with one important question What will I do on my last day? Or more specifically, What apps will I download? The answer is simple. Download the official Cheezburger app and look at cat photos all day. You know theres no better way to spend your final hours. Also, you can go on a Wanelo shopping spree, talk to someone in a foreign language, check your Yahoo email, and reminisce over the past year with Google. Here are the top apps of the last day of our lives until tomorrow.

Cheezburger (Free)

Yes thats right. The home of hilarious cat pictures, I Can Has Cheezburger?, now has an official mobile app. Amidst all of the more serious, practical, and useful apps, this just had to b e the top app of the week. As a denizen of the Internet, I had no choice but to recognize the powerful force that has been unleashed against the human races productivity. Now you can easily browse through hilarious photos and entries from all of the sites under the Cheezburger Network. But try not to get too distracted by this app. Ceiling Cat is watching you, after all.

Wanelo (Free)

Wanelo.com has really taken off as a shopping website unlike any other. Standing for Want, Need, Love, Wanelo is like the lovechild of Twitter, Pinterest, and Etsy, with all the same distracting social networking properties plus the added horror of high probability of wallet lightening. People can share various products from all over the world with their friends and family, and just looking at the site you can see that only the most unique and stylish items get promoted. You can also save items for later, which youll probably have to do while you wait fo r your inevitable Wanelo-created welfare checks.

Vocre Translate Voice & Text ($2.99)

There are plenty of voice translating apps walking around the block, but not many of them will turn heads like Vocre Translate Voice & Text. Allowing you to translate both voice and text, the app is designed around the idea of a face to face table conversation. The interface is designed around that concept, with your Androids screen split in half, picking up both of your voices, confirming your words, and then spitting a translation out on the other side. All of these apps have accuracy issues so far, but with a few novel features and a nice list of languages, this app is nothing to sneeze at.

Yahoo Mail update (Free)

As someone, like many ot hers, with multiple email addresses, it has always made me sad inside to see how far behind Yahoo Mail was in terms of mobile access. This latest update seeks to change my mind, completely overhauling the interface, adding some much requested features like pull-to-refresh, and rebranding itself as Y! Mail. Ive had my Yahoo mail account since I was a lad of 12, and Im glad to finally see it catch up with Gmail and the rest. Surely, this is but another momentous occasion to add to 2012s accolades.

Google Zeitgeist 2012 (Free)

Few people can really look beyond their own immediate vicinity and pierce the veil that surrounds the true cultural zeitgeist of our time, but Google in all their power and data collecting glory absolutely can. As we round out this rather memorable year, we can reminisce of days recently passed using various top ten lists and features from Google. We re-elected Obama, assembled the Avengers, rose with the Dark Knig ht, and Oppa Gangnam Styled all over the nation. Depending on todays outcome, we will have either survived or been a part of the apocalypse, too. What a year.

Android App Video Review: Ovenbreak

Ovenbreak is a new auto-runner from Com2Us and Devsisters. It is a blatant clone of iRunner from Droidhen, but its still a fairly well-made clone. The visuals are very colorful and well done, as is most of the app, but the design is really lacking. The game is much harder than it should be, which tempts you to buy in-app purchase currency. I really hate it when greed ruins an otherwise fun game, but the game is still not bad in the slightest.

The game takes place in the tyrannical world of b aked goods. You are but a lowly gingerbread man, powerless to stop massive titans from burning your friends and family to death, only to eat them. But youve got a stronger survival instinct than most. You wait for your chance to make a break for it and try to escape. The auto-run gameplay involves jumping, sliding, and shimmying yourself across hanging objects while dodging obstacles and collecting an endless path of jellybeans. Within these jellybean chains are various letters that spell out the word freedom, as well as super jellies, the currency of the game. Fully spelling out freedom will restore your extra life if youve died, and give you a big point bonus if you havent. There are multiple game modes which can all be unlocked with large sums of super jellies, and thats where the problems begin.

The only way for you to get super jellies aside from in-app purchases is to fully complete a level. If you die before the end, they are all lost. Sounds kind of reasonabl e, but the game is way harder than it should be. Because the levels are completely randomized, following the jellybean trail often leads you to certain death. You have to forcibly train yourself to go against all your gamer instincts and NOT collect the candies. The first real level is also absurdly long and takes forever to complete, increasing your chances of dying. Of course, you cant progress by winning. You have to win the same level a dozen times to even unlock the first extra game mode, let alone the other few.

The game looks and sounds great, and I really love the extremely morbid and highly amusing premise. I cant complain too much, considering the game is totally free to play, but just because its free to download doesnt mean its free from criticism. The game is designed to be a potential money pit. It can still be enjoyable, but Id recommend iRunner over this game any day. Either way, if you like one, youll probably like the other too, so feel free to chec k them both out.

New Android apps worth downloading: Flock, XFINITY TV Player update, OverLight - Alpha

Photography app Flock uses your devices GPS capabilities to link up with your friends and make shared albums for photos you take at the same event. An update to XFINITY TV Player is next, bringing better video streaming capabilities. Finally, we have OverLight - Alpha, a puzzle game that uses lasers and glass blocks to cause chain explosions.

Flock (Free)

Whats it about? Flock allows users to band together to share their photos and create group photo albums, then share them.

Whats cool? When you and your friends use the app and take photos at a shared event, Flock keeps track of the location data and then brings the shots together, automatically creating the album for you all that everyone can then check out individually on their devices. It eliminates the need for you to share photos individually or gather them all to another service. The app can even create albums out of photos you shot before you installed it.

Whos it for? Flocks a great app for groups of friends who also love to shoot photos with their Android devices.

Whats it like? For more photo album goodness, try Smart Album Photo Calendar.

XFINITY TV Player update (Free)

Whats it about? Subscribers to Comcast Cables XFINITY service can use the XFINITY TV Player app to watch On Demand shows on their Android devices.

Whats cool? Watching cable TV shows on your Android tablet or phone is pretty slick. The app lets you stream content from premium channels such as HBO, Starz, Encore and more, and a few of the channels will even allow you to download TV shows to watch offline. XFINITYs update adds fixes to the app to make it easier to use various devices to stream XFINITY content, and increases the stability the playback.

Whos it for? This ones specifically for Comcast customers who subscribe to the XFINITY service. If thats you, youll want to check out the app.

Whats it like? For more great streaming content, try Netflix (if youre a subscriber) and Crackle to see some free content from Sony.

OverLight Alpha ($0.99)

Whats it about? Puzzler OverLight - Alpha is a ll about lasers. Your job is to use glass blocks of various shapes to redirect two lasers into intersecting, thereby blowing stuff up and scoring points.

Whats cool? The screen is populated by glass blocks that look kind of like Tetris pieces, and each one diverts a pair of beams in different ways. Your job is to see the patterns and tap blocks to remove them, thereby sending the beams in different directions. You want the two beams to converge in the same glass block to score points, which will destroy it. The more blocks you clear at once with the lasers, the more points you score, and you can chain the explosions together for combos. Every block you tap costs you points, however, there is a time limit.

Whos it for? Puzzle game fans should find an interesting new take in OverLight - Alpha.

Whats it like? Theres something of a similarity to Tetris in here. Wheres My Water a lso uses lasers.

How to better combine home and mobile gaming

When we discuss ways in which mobile apps and games can interact with home gaming, we must realize that this is a relatively untapped idea. The Xbox SmartGlass app, which I discussed previously, is brand new, and was probably created in response to the Wii U. In general, though, our mobile and home worlds don't collide too often outside of our mobile security keys for massively multiplayer games.

But it does happen occasionally. Blizzard developed the Mobile Armory for World of Warcraft, which novelly allows you to participate in the gold auction house from your phone. This is an outstanding idea, and it seems strange that they have not developed a similar app for Diablo III.

Then you have the Mass Effect 3 Datapad for iOS, which allows players to play a mini-game that will affect their Gala ctic Readiness rating within the core game, thus influencing what kind of ending they can get at the conclusion of the story. Further, that app features a mobile codex of information on the game world, but it's incomplete. That version of the codex does not unlock entries as you unlock them within the game, meaning that the only knowledge you'll get from the app is that from before the events of the game.

And then you have the companion app for the upcoming console title Watch Dogs, which will provide you with a real-time map of the game world, providing you with information on events going on out of sight as you play. The app will also allow players to enter their friends' games and tweak the world as they play, such as by flipping a traffic light from green to red as they approach the intersection.

Closing the gap between console and app

There are more ways we can interact with home games while we aren't home. There are more ways for us to engage. Here are some ideas.

The mobile auction house for World of Warcraft is good, but what about a mobile cash shop? I don't know about you, but when I play Star Wars: The Old Republic, I usually try to make the most of my time within the game by actually playing it, and not by browsing for new lightsaber crystals. I'm sure that game's new cash shop is doing fine, but it would do even better if people could spend their free time away from home by shopping for items or opening random loot packs. Currently, you can only do these things within the game itself.

An extension of this would be resource management. Imagine if you were able to modify your Call of Duty or Battlefield loadouts on the go. Or if you were playing an MMO and you had spen t the previous day questing and want to spend this evening in player-versus-player scenarios, you could change your character's gear and swap out modifications. Or if you bought a few clothing items from a cash shop and wanted to mix and max until you had a set you like. I know I rarely stick with the predetermined sets.

Saints Row: The Third, another home game, has a standalone application called the Initiation Station, which allows you to create a character from scratch for use in the game. These character designs are uploaded to the game's website, and you can download them when starting a new game or visiting a plastic surgeon within the game. If they can make a standalone program for this, why not a mobile app? Folks would mess around with something like that constantly. I know I would. Character creation in games is often a lengthy process, and it would be nice to be able to not have to sit in front of the computer or dominate the TV while doing this. An app would also allow you to take breaks during the process.

As I said above, a good mobile codex would open up new entries as you unlock them in the game, so by the end of the game you have a good, handy encyclopedia of information. But they could be more than that. There is an app for the PlayStation 3 that is more or less a Metal Gear Solid encyclopedia. The Metal Gear saga is quite complex, so I liked having this on hand when I played through Metal Gear Solid 4. Ingeniously, this encyclopedia also had all the information about that game, but it was all redacted until you had a completed game save file. That would be even better as a mobile app than something you have to view on your TV, and there are plenty of games with expansive and interesting worlds that could use such a tool.

Sony has an interesting deal with the PS Vita. They have made some games, like the Metal Gear collects and PlayStation All-Stars, available on both the PS3 and the Vita. When you purchase the console version you also get the Vita version, and your saved games transfer between the two platforms. If you have PlayStation Plus, even, your games store themselves in the cloud and are easily accessible on the fly on whichever version you want to play. Independent developers creating smaller games would do well to adopt a similar practice between PC and mobile. You can get Super Hexagon on both your iPhone and computer, so why not make it so buying one gets you both versions? I'm sure there is some infrastructure obstacles that would need to be overcome, but I don't doubt that enterprising developers could do that if they really wanted to. And I think that kind of feature would be very appealing to many gamers.

But that's just the tip of the ice berg. The mobile scene is still a veritable Wild West, and console game developers have yet to fully embrace it as a way to make serious cash. As they start to figure this stuff out, I have no doubt that we will see a lot of very interesting things. 2013 might be the year for that as SmartGlass adds more functions. At the very least, it give us something to hope for.
